roxy christina barcelona

woooooo busy weekend ! on friday, kristen came down from new york so she and christina could go to maryland sheep and wool. it was great to finally meet her after occupying the same space on the internet as her for like ten years ! it was everything i thought it would be and more. we met up with christina's coworker kathleen, got beer, and went to vientiane, where i once again had tofu lad na because i'm super unadventurous ! i also had an ephemere with dinner and it was a surprisingly good combination.

ephemere
appley beer

after dinner we got snacks- i had um, v8 and a tastyklair pie?

tastyklair

while everyone else opted for ice cream (and chocolate covered nuts for kathleen !). then we went back to our house and watched the most pbs show ever, "sandwiches that you will like". it was pretty weird- the sandwiches mostly looked disgusting and the footage all seemed to be from the mid-90s. the grossest was the "st. paul sandwich":

GROSS
"The sandwich consists of a deep fried egg foo young patty (made with egg, bean sprouts, and minced white onions) served with dill pickle slices, white onion, mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato between two slices of white bread."

ahhhhh ! st. paul is probably rolling over in his damn grave over that thing. i seriously can't stop thinking about it and doing like, a soft gag.

on saturday, the ladies woke up early to go to maryland, and i got up around 9 and tried to do some stuff. i uh, tried to watch some DVR'd stuff (i have like 500 episodes of "what not to wear" and "the king of queens" DVR'd because... i have bad taste in television !) and tried to read the evolution of calpurnia tate but i found it to be pretty annoying and obnoxious so i ended up shelving it for awhile (not literally, it's still cluttering up the livingroom !). i also leveled my priest a little bit !

when the girls got back from maryland (exhausted but with tales of how sheep vaginas look like people vaginas) we met up with mouse and nate and diana (!!!! so many people) and went to bobby flay's hamburger restaurant. well, *i* didn't go- mouse and i went to capo giro because he already ate and i wasn't hungry, and i had gelato for dinner.

capo giro
why have most of my pictures been food so far?

we all met up at capo giro and i had a really good iced coffee. after a few hours i started to get hungry, so i uh, bought a quiche?

quiche
MORE FOOD

and then we came back to my house and met up with anna, who was coming back from like, a weekend long bachelorette party. after christina and kristen went to bed, and nate, anna, and mouse went home, nnamdi stopped by and we hung out for awhile ! that is like the most people i've ever seen in one day.

on sunday, kristen, christina, and i went to green line and had iced mochas and breakfast burritos with hot sauce. kristen left to go hang out with some other philadelphia friends, and diana went to her first haircut appointment. THEN ! mouse and i went over to jeanne's to hang out with jeanne and mike and wait for diana to come give us haircuts. we got burritos and watched the david tennant hamlet

hamlet

david tennant was super over the top as per usual, but the dude playing laertes made david tennant look subdued. it was uncomfortable to watch this dude, he basically acted like when someone is trying to loudly let a person hiding in a closet know that someone is about to open the closet door.

oh, the most important part ! jeanne was kittensitting a kitten she found in the alley when he was a super super newborn. he's like three weeks old now maybe and she and her friend hannah are sharing his care. he's like, the best? i got to be assistant kittensitter while she got her hair cut !

kitten

little wolfman ! he purrs already and plays and is super cute and funny but he weighs like 8 oz and he has trouble pooping by himself (he gets lots of belly massages and wet washcloths and vet visits so i think he's okay). i love him !

jeanne, mouse, and i all got haircuts. jeanne and i just got updated versions of our current haircuts, but we watched the special features of band of brothers to pick out a world war II haircut for mouse. he ended up getting the nixon:

nixon

it looks pretty good ! i think my hair looks good too because for the first time ever, people at work are actually noticing and complimenting my hair. it's weird though because i can barely tell the difference. i had to get 2 inches of gross split ends cut off but my hair is still like two feet long.

after we left, we went to whole foods and i missed another friend opportunity. i was wearing this shirt:

cool shirt

and the girl at the hot bar counter was like, "oh, that shirt is awesome, it reminds me that i wanted to call my girlfriends to play d&d". whatttttt that's exactly what i want to do ! i've even made like, craigslist ads looking for girls to play with ! and for some reason i didn't say anything and was just like, "cool story bro" and left. mouse was like, "maybe we'll see her again next time you're here" and i said i'd never seen him before but he pointed out that it was unlikely that a person was making a one-time guest appearance working at a store or something.

when i got home, it was a billion zillion degrees in my apartment. christina was dutifully cataloging all of her beautiful yarn. i watched part of treme with her, which i really like

haha !
check out this cool treme photoshop someone made

i'm really bummed that the pacific is a total stinking pile of shit and garbage and puke and garbage and farts, but treme fills the void a little. oddly though, i really like it but i don't know why i like it. i don't feel any pressure to watch it on time every week but i'm enjoying it a lot.

thennnnn i leveled my new priest with paul's warrior for awhile. we got to level 10 and probably could've gotten to 20 pretty quickly, but i was really tired. leveling with paul is fun because he's very methodical and focused and i can zone out and smite stuff.

i'm going to go do work now. these are my busiest two weeks of the year and so far everyone is being annoying. my updates may be spotty and complainy until after may 16 !

sugar bear

hey dudes ! i had a pretty good, busy weekend this weekend. on friday, i came home and did nothing as planned. like, put on comfy pants, took a nap, watched tv, ate dinner, hung out with christina, etc. since i had to get up super early on saturday.

on saturday, mouse and i left for nyc at 7:30 in the morning. it was stressful from the beginning because it seemed like we were going to be late for the bus, but luckily the bus was super late so we made it ! i was already kinda cranky at that point because rushing around and having a tight schedule puts me on edge. the ride to nyc went by super fast. when we went over a bridge, mouse made me put his headphones on and his mp3 player was playing the theme from 'taxi'.

taxi

we had some subway trouble when we got there- i figured out what we needed to do beforehand and one of the trains we needed wasn't running. i figured out a workaround, but not before taking us to harlem by accident ! oh, by the way, we were going up to go to moma. mouse had never been before ! i've been there approximately 400 times but i do like the museum and i like doing stuff with mouse ! all the same junk was there as always, though i did take a picture of this mondrian that is in roxy colors:

mondrian

we also saw the marina abramovic exhibition and it was the coolest thing ever. i obviously like, don't know shit about art, especially not performance art, so i wasn't impressed when we passed by her exhibit on a lower floor- basically, she sits at a table silently staring at the chair across from her and anyone can sit and stare at her for as long as they want.

marina abramovic

when we got to the actual exhibit upstairs, though, i was blown away. while i might not be educated about art i can always appreciate a total weirdo. part of the exhibit (which you may have heard of, for groping reasons) is two naked people standing inside a doorway and you're supposed to squeeze between them. i didn't do it, but lots of middle aged mom ladies with fanny packs did ! my favorite part was the room with parts of her installment balkan baroque (which included six thousand pounds of cow bones !)

balkan baroque

after the museum, we went to candle 79 for brunch.

candle 79

it was okay ! a lot of people recommended it to me really highly, but i thought it was kind of bland and overpriced. i got pancakes with strawberries and strawberry butter, a side of yukon gold skillet potatoes, and an iced coffee. the pancakes were kind of tough, the strawberry butter just tasted like salt, and i got like.. two strawberries cut up on it. the only saving grace was their ginger maple syrup, which was delicious. the iced coffee was okay, but they only had raw sugar, which does not dissolve in iced coffee, like, at all. haha. also the menu said it was $3 and they charged me $4.

the potatoes were actually the worst thing of all. doesn't "yukon gold skillet potatoes" evoke like, country potatoes with crispy edges or whatever? it was skinless boiled potatoes with some green onions and some spices, served by an icecream scoop ! i know that sounds terrible, but the ginger maple syrup was so good that they get an 'okay' rating. mouse had tofu scramble with seitan sausage (the sausage was in imperceptible teeny chunks in the scramble), potatoes, and toast. he finished it, but i'm not sure what he thought !

potatoes
this is what i expected !

anyway, we made our way to the bus after that. i kind of dislike new york. it's full of transplants and tourists who don't know how to walk on a sidewalk and i did not pass a restaurant without seeing at least 2 people taking iphone pictures of their food ! i had a good time though, despite being kind of cranky, cause i like hanging out with mouse. he also tickled me a lot on the bus ride home cause he was bored and i enjoyed that, because i'm basically a toddler.

on the bus ride home, i finally read the hunger games and totally loved it.

hunger games

if you haven't read it, the basic premise is that teenagers in a bleak future are forced to compete in a "battle royale" type scenario, but like... more interesting ! it's been awhile since i've been so into a book i read- even though it's pretty clear from the beginning that the protagonist will prevail in some way (this is not a spoiler- there is no way there would even be a book if this wasn't the case), how she does it and the actual outcome were both super interesting to read. there were a few times that i felt frustrated by her waffling over her feelings and thoughts, but it was actually a pretty realistic interpretation of what would go through a teenager's head in that situation. all in all, the only thing i didn't like was the wolves. i'm not doing a good job of hyping up the book because i don't want to give any actual spoilers ! ahhhh.

after i got home, i took a very brief nap and regrouped with mouse and christina to watch the first episode of the new season of doctor who.

doctor who

1) i love amy pond. i love how they introduced her and i loved her as an adult, and i'm so excited to see what happens with her
2) matt smith is okay so far ! kinda funny but kind of seems like he's aping david tennant. maybe that was the point, since he was just getting used to his regeneration? but i truly don't think i can take another like, "theater" doctor.
3) the story was pretty good, though i guess they're saving their special effects money for later stories. it wasn't quite as goofy and over the top as i expected
4) HATE the new theme and rebranding !

overall i'm pretty excited to see what happens ! i haven't been able to watch the show almost as it airs since the revival started- i've mostly had to download episodes or wait til the seasons were over.

my big plans for sunday were to wear comfy pants all day. they were somewhat foiled when christina and i decided to go to the green line and have iced coffee and knit, and then do some grocery shopping. i decided to buy the exact food i ate every day when my eating disorder was in check, so i'll be having gross black bean burgers for lunch every day and maybe that will magically cure me until i can get a new e.d. therapist. magic is real right?

magic

after that, we cleaned up the kitchen and made pierogies and watched tv and knitted together. super super super relaxing day ! i started on my sweet socks, and switching colors is surprisingly easy. i watched like 30 seconds of a youtube and just decided to keep both colors of yarn over my left index finger (i knit continental) and just grab whichever color i needed with the needle.

sweet sock

sweet sock back

unfortunately, though, i've been knitting super tightly, as i'm wont to do when i learn a new technique, so the socks are like... baby sized. i'm obviously going to have to start them over with better tension, but i'm totally dreading it. oh well- my hands and wrists are killing me from knitting so tightly, and i have blisters on my thumbs from sliding the stitches off my super pointy needles. haha. ohhhhh welllllll.

oh yeah. i wanted to mention that i've kind of given up on the pacific. i'm 1.5 episodes behind- i tried to catch up yesterday and i had to turn it off halfway through because it's so motherfucking boring.

the pacific

my problems so far
- they are trying to create a 'band of brothers' feel to it by obscuring the fact that leckie, sledge, and basilone don't know each other and aren't in the same unit.
- the pacing of each episode is so terrible; it's impossible to tell if one day or one year has passed at any given point.
- they are doing a horrible job of telling the story of the war. very little talk about strategy or battles or japan or like.. anything, besides the tom hanks narration at the beginning. if i didn't already know what was going on i'd think that the soldiers spent like, one night in the pacific and either one long weekend or one year fucking australian girls so far?
- the episodes are like 30 minutes long with a bunch of padding
- they've wasted so much time trying to work on character development, yet i cannot name a single person besides the three main characters and don't know who is in what unit and don't care about any of them
- everything seems way too modern. nothing really looks old and no one acts like people did in the 40s.
- it blows

okay, time to go do some actual work. this entry has taken me forever and ever to write because my super annoying coworker has been annoying the fuck out of me all morning !!!!

p.s. i forgot to mention that i tried that thing where you wash your hair with baking soda and apple cider vinegar (i refuse to say 'no-poo') and my hair looked okay but felt disgusting and greasy and my whole face felt greasy all day ! and despite rinsing my hair for like 239283 minutes under warm water, 3092830293 under cold water, waiting a day, washing it with HEAD AND SHOULDERS and conditioning with pantene, my head smelled like apple cider vinegar today when i blowdried. and the mix was definitely not too vinegar-y- if anything it was not vinegar-y enough because i filled the shampoo bottle without a funnel.

slurp it from your palm

hey guys, it's the day after easter, so i don't have to cringe at any more OMG JESUS WUZ A ZOMBIE jokes !

my weekend played out exactly like i described it ! on friday, i got out of work at 2 and came home and started a new chewbacca. that last one was so fucked up and gigantic ! i managed to get it down to the correct size (4.5") and finish it this weekend, but it's still obviously my first project. the stuffing came through in a few places and his eyes are crooked and i forgot to sew his face on before i sewed him up so i had to improvise after, and he unfortunately did not get a nose.

chewbacca

overall i'm pretty pleased that i learned a new skill but making that teeny bandolier was so annoying that i may never crochet again.

on saturday, christina and i went to whole foods to get groceries. i bought um.. "sandwich flats"? which may be good for eating veggie burgers on since i'm not into hamburger buns (though hot dog buns are my fave?)

sandwich

i also got some icelandic chocolate easter eggs which i forgot about and are probably melting somewhere, 2lbs of strawberries, weird vegetarian meatballs, and like... yogurt? maybe. it's all irrelevant though because i forgot to bring any of it to work with me so i'll be eating whatever i can scavenge here, which includes two reeses peanut butter eggs so far. we also went to loop so i could pick up my yarn. i got some more berroco vintage to finish some projects, and one of these things that is oddly called a kacha kacha?

kacha kacha

saturday night, mouse, christina, and i went out to adobe in manayunk for dinner. i was weirdly not hungry so i ordered a salad and broccoli bisque. the salad was just like, the saddest salad in the universe (2 slices of cucumber, 3 slices of mushroom, 2 slices of tomato, 2 slices of green pepper, 4 pieces of shredded carrot, and lettuce) and i um, forgot what bisque is? haha. so i was kinda disappointed to get... bisque. i also got a half pitcher of white sangria which turns out was too much sangria for one person. i don't know what happened but i'm suddenly bad at eating at restaurants...? haha

adobe

after dinner, we drove out to chestnut hill (or mt. airy?) to go to the ice cream trolley.

trolley car

it's in a beautiful area and everything, but the allure is that SOMETIMES they have tofutti and mouse can have ice cream too. they didn't have any on saturday, but i'd made him a vegan easter basket so he had treats too.

easter basket
jelly bellies, orbit bubblemint gum, panda black licorice, marzipan ritter sport

i got a waffle cone with soft serve and rainbow sprinkles (the best) and christina got birthday cake ice cream, and then we drove around for awhile looking at chestnut hill in the dark. it was a really beautiful night spent with my favorite people on earth (minus jeanne d. and my mom ! haha).

on sunday, i tried to clean my room. i separated my laundry into four piles:

- garbage
- dirty
- clean
- not dirty but not quite clean

and threw out any trash in my room + the garbage clothes (i had NOTHING to donate because i don't take care of my clothes and everything is from old navy and is like, holey as hell), bagged up the dirty laundry, put away the laundry that was already folded... and left a bunch of not dirty not clean stuff all over the floor. it looks leaps and bounds better, but even doing that took me like five hours because i hateeeee cleaning and didn't want to do it and kept complaining ! haha.

after that, mike came over and we went to get food (i got beet salad which turned out to be raw and gross, ravioli pasta salad with asparagus, sundried tomatoes, and olives, citrus roasted potatoes, and an orange) and ate it in clark park by the dog bowl with christina.

dog bowl
the dog bowl in wintery months

it was so beautiful out and we got to see the cutest toddler (her dad gave us a flier for a craft fair at the firehouse next weekend ! i may stop by, but christina will be in boston) and the best dogs. it was pretty weird, there was a teeny puppy on the blanket next to us who was identical to mike's old dog molly.

mollyyyyy

after that we came back to our house and christina and mike ignored me for warcraft huhuhuhuh while i crocheted. i guess i was ignoring them for crocheting, too. we also watched the next episode of the pacific but mike aggressively "who's that guy?"'d me so i missed a lot of the fine details. um, it didn't exactly strike me as gripping and entertaining though. god damnit, why isn't the pacific any good yet? it's also weird that i find the dude playing leckie to be super hot

leckie

and his character is by far the most, um, "meaty", and he's the best actor so far of the main characters (i have high hopes for joseph mazzello but he hasn't been in it much yet), but like... i just fucking hate his character? he's so pompous and arrogant and they're writing him so heavy-handed. ugh. anyway, i'll report later once i watch the episode.

nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww i'm at work and i've already eaten so much candy and am basically cornholio right now

have you seen my portfolio?

so i'm going to go do the handful of things i have on deck for the day and maybe watch some netflix instant viewing while i do it.

long ago

hello dogs. i'm sorta bummed to be at work because it's raining and i love sleeping while it's raining !

on friday, christina, mouse, and i went to vientiane to meet up with nate and anna. the wait was pretty long because the restaurant is super super tiny, but we ran into brian v. while we were waiting and it was really nice to see him ! i got tofu lad na (and will probably only get that there for the rest of my life) and everyone else got neat looking stuff including homemade beef jerky (which is apparently amazing, but i've only had real beef jerky once and it was nothing to write home about). mouse went home after dinner because the wait was so long and he had to work in the morning, so the rest of us got treats (percy jackson flavored airheads?) and went back to my house, where we watched beavis and butthead music videos

beavis and buttheaD

and um, that hbo documentary about magic johnson and larry bird? nate and i are both really into larry bird highlight reels and i think we were hoping the documentary would just be a 90 minute highlight reel but it was actually the touching story of their rivalry and friendship. oh also larry bird is autistic or something. what the hell.

corrie
larry bird's daughter who he DENIES IS HIS DAUGHTER. also it's hard to search for magic johnson and larry bird without finding pics of lady bird johnson

on saturday, christina and i went to green line and i got a delicious apple lemonade which gave me the idea for all these lemonades i didn't actually make ! we went to whole foods and trader joe's after that and both stuck to our lists and got a bunch of cool groceries. then we came home and christina defrosted our gross freezer (it was seriously like 50% ice since we moved in) and i finally sewed a button on the hat i made for mouse's nephew.

baby hat

then we went up to mouse's mom's so i could meet his super small nephew, scott. holy crap, he's cool ! he's like six weeks old so he's not at the stage where he... does anything but he was a really cute tiny little loaf and he slept on me. mouse looooooooooves him

scott

and scott obviously looooooooooooooves the hat i made him:

hat

heh heh ! it was also nice to see mouse's family, because i haven't been up there in awhile. his grandma gives very good grandma arm hugs.

on sunday, i made sweet potato salad which i'm proud to say was pretty delicious. i roasted small/thin sweet potatoes cut in half (but cut unevenly so some pieces would be super soft and some would be firmer) with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and then cubed the slices and mixed them with carrot ginger dressing and green onions.

sweet potato salad
it basically looked like this but i left the skins on, and um, those aren't green onions

i also got stuff to make delicious hoagies (tofurky slices, munster cheese, avocado spread with lime and garlic and salt, cucumbers, tomatoes, arugula) and jeanne and mouse came over to have lunch. we watched the bear, which was a very beautiful movie:

bears

it's about a baby bear whose mom dies who is taken under the wing of a big male grizzly who is being pursued by hunters. it's notable because there's almost no dialogue and the actors are just like.. real bears and it's almost like watching it really happen in the wild (but with a few claymation dreams added to give insight into the bear's psyche). the story promotes kindness to all creatures and ends with the line, "the greatest thrill is not to kill but to let live". aw. also it's like 2 hours of a baby bear doing shit so if you like that, you should rent it !

what else ! oh, the third episode of the pacific. i really really hate to say it, but despite this being the best episode so far, it really hasn't grabbed me yet.

pacific australia

this episode found the marines in melbourne after guadalcanal and before peleliu. most of the episode was about robert leckie falling in love with a greek australian girl but the pacing and sense of time is so off that i have no idea if they knew each other 3 days or 3 months. the characterization was a little better, and the guy playing leckie is a legitimately good actor (and he was good at sex scenes ! but the unrealistic sex scenes where the lady is psyched that the guy comes in 30 seconds and then hops off after unprotected sex and doesn't need to take care of anything is so distracting !), but the dude playing basilone totally sucks. like, he was supposed to be anguished because his good friend died, and torn between excitement at getting to go home to sell war bonds and guilt over abandoning his fellow marines/his best friend, but he just seemed vaguely grumpy? he's just so so so wooden. i also think they're trying to cover up the fact that the show is not about one unit, and not about men who ever know each other? because the lines are super blurred and they even show the characters in the same rooms.

i don't know. i wish they could've found one unit with good stories and not just used the three famous stories/memoirs about the pacific theater.

oh, what else? i finally finished tender morsels.

tender morsels

so many people told me this book was good and i'm convinced that they were lying or the author paid them to tell me, because it was terrible in ways that i was totally unfamiliar with? the book starts with a father repeatedly raping and verbally abusing his daughter and violently forcing her to have abortions. once her father dies, the author moves on to a violent gang rape of the main character. then she's sent to a magical land where no one can hurt her (just like what happens to real rape victims...?) with her two babies and is totally psyched and happy, because having babies from rape is totally the best thing to ever happen to a woman (because women love babies).

had that been the last rape, it still would have been a little over the top, but next a man makes his way into their dream world (since he was wearing a bear costume in the real world, he's an actual bear in their world) and... sexually assaults one of her daughters as a bear and chases her with his bear dick out with the intent to rape her. at this point you may be saying, "there's no way this author could get more rape into this book !" but you'd be wrong, because one of the daughters uses magic to conjure up five men with HOT POKERS FOR DICKS to violently rape her mother's rapists almost to death in retribution. and at no point is anyone like, "that was totally not the right thing to do" or "this sends a really weird message about rape" or anything?

aside from that, the writing was pretty bad. the whole thing reads like snow white rape fan fiction. it takes place in Ye Olden Tymes and the Olde Tymey writing is super inconsistent and tedious, and the author also introduces 293920832 characters whose stories go nowhere and barely spends any time on the characterization of the main characters. and then the ending is like, "having daughters is great". cool message...? anyway, terrible book.

aside from that, um, i'm going to try my hand at making a sock.

sweet socks

this is the sweet socks pattern from knit picks, and i'm going to make it in those colors (the yarn is stroll sock yarn). it should be fun, despite the fact that i don't wear socks. anyway, back to work !

p.s. i also happened to watch part of kristie alley's reality show and it was equal parts boring, depressing, and funny (maybe slightly skewed toward boring). i think i'd really like her if she wasn't a scientologist and asshole who owns exotic pets.

all dressed up

i think i probably start every entry with 'hey dudes' so i'm not going to today ! p.s. hey dudes !!!!!!

yesterday was a weird day of trying stuff for me- i'm working on some cool interesting eating disorder stuff that totally sucks for me, and had to try to eat normally and be normal for a whole day. it basically felt like when the golden girls dressed up like men and went into the men's locker room at the country club- i felt super antsy and weird all day. eating normal food and not doing anything... well, disordered for a whole day made me feel like i accidentally left 100 stoves on- like, something was nagging at me all day like i forgot something important.

eating disorders
my favorite meal is a hoagie and a pamphlet

it's really hard to work on and think about this stuff, needless to say. after my last entry, i am trying really hard not to get ahead of myself and worry about how i'm going to deal with peoples' reactions to me losing weight (an unfortunate consequence of eating disorder recovery for me). like, i WILL have to deal with it when it happens, but it won't be noticeable for months.

i also did not take a nap when i got home from work. my weird period of like, winter malaise got me into the habit of going home after work, taking a nap, and then going to bed super super late (like 2-3am), so i'd be tired the next day and take another nap etc. etc. etc. i've already felt more energetic and positive and um, into the idea of hanging out and leaving my house lately so i think that's a positive change. let's hang out everybody !

i worked on my chewbacca last night- unfortunately because i used worsted weight yarn instead of dk, it's huge and misshapen so from here on out i'm just going to call it a bigfoot. the arms took about 10 minutes each to crochet:

bigfoot

oddly the pattern required me to stuff them and then brush them and of course the stuffing got pulled through:

bigfoot arms

i'm going to re-do them since it's so fast. by the way, brushing patches of bigfoot fur with a brush is warping me further because i love doing it and it's so relaxing.

oh. yeah. one last thing ! i'm even more bummed by 'the pacific' now because there was an extended night combat scene where john basilone repairs a machine gun or something, and he burnt his arm, and he killed some japanese people, and it was really vague and hard to tell what was happening, and this is what it was supposed to portray:

basilone

On October 24, 1942 his unit engaged the Japanese in the Lunga area when their position came under attack by a regiment of approximately 3000 soldiers. The Japanese forces began a frontal attack using machine-guns, grenades and mortars against the American heavy machine-guns. The American forces fought for the next 48 hours until only Basilone and two other men from his squad were still able to continue fighting. Basilone moved an extra gun into position and maintained continual fire against the incoming Japanese forces. He repaired another machine-gun and personally manned it, holding the defensive line until replacements arrived. With the continuous fighting, ammunition became critically low and supply lines were cut off. Basilone fought through hostile lines and returned with urgently needed ammunition for his gunners. By the end of the battle, the Japanese regiment was virtually annihilated.

i know that won't mean anything to most of you, but they did such a piss poor job of conveying ANY of that that it doesn't give me high hopes for the rest of the series. maybe i'll just watch band of brothers again.

p.s. mouse might come meet me for lunch ! i'm gonna get a fruit salad though cause i have a veggie burger for lunch.
p.p.s. having regular poops is weird.

it's pearfection

i just ate the best pear in the universe, fyi.

heyyyy dudes. what's happening? my weekend was pretty good overall- on friday, i tried to go buy pants and jeans after work but that wasn't in the cards. i went to lane bryant (one of like... three fat people clothing stores? but this one is expensive and mostly has mom clothes) and their system of sizing jeans is baffling. like, there's three colors representing three body types, and within each color there's sizes 1-8? with 1 being a 14/16 and 8 being a 28/30 maybe? the girl working there was busy intently flirting with the security guard and wouldn't actually explain the sizes to me so i gave up. i did try on a few pairs and every pair of jeans on earth is low rise, which is a bummer for me.

mom jeans

then i came home and farted around and crap. on saturday, christina went to nyc, so i had to drive by myself ! it wasn't too bad- my only real problem was parking and unparking. also, on the way there, i was surprised to see a guy actually doing appropriate traffic signals with his arm (the likes of which i haven't seen since driver's ed), only to discover he was actually just fucking around with his arm in a way that turned out to mean something. i went to trader joe's and whole foods to pick up some groceries, including the trader joe's dark chocolate sea salt almonds

mmmm

on saturday night, mouse and i went to our friend lauren's birthday party in ambler. we got to see bj, helen, and james, and uh... lauren, obviously ! haha. i haven't seen her in a million years and she was a very gracious host. also, our friend jessica who i haven't seen in like four years (who is very nice !) was there with her baby and i got to hug him and hold him and give him a bottle and he pulled my hair ! p.s. sorry to embarrass lauren but her mother was there and told us that when lauren was 2 or so, her mom was changing her baby brother's diaper and lauren pointed to his junk and asked what it was, so her mom told her, and she was like, "oh, i love peanuts"

mouse's spring allergies (and reaction to claritin) are totally nuts this year, so we went home pretty early. i had insane queasiness and stomach pain so i ended up staying up until 6am (last night i discovered that i forgot to take my birth control for like three days !). on sunday i woke up early and... well, i did some heroics with paul and ibrahim, but then i made pasta salad for a picnic in clark park !

pasta salad

my um, signature pasta salad is just avocados, tomatoes, and pasta (i'd put red onions too but mouse doesn't like them) with dressing- i like drew's smoked tomato dressing, but this time i used trader joe's tuscan italian and it was pretty good ! i also got some fake oreos (joe-joe's !) and pretzels and uh, capri suns, and we went to fairmount park and ate at an area mouse and i refer to as "the affair park" cause we saw two people definitely having an affair there once !

then we went to old navy so i could return something and i got four of the same skirt:

in black, blue, green, and this print:

skirt

i say "skirt" but it's actually a tube dress. i tend to wear my pants and skirts up at my fucking armpits so these fall to the knee- their regular summer skirts like, reveal my vagina.

when i got home, i started crocheting my chewbacca. dudes, crocheting is easy? just look at youtube ! it took me 30 minutes tops to teach myself well enough to follow an amigurumi pattern ! unfortunately though, i used worsted weight yarn instead of dk, like suggested, and it's fucking huge ! i ordered some dk from knit picks to make some reasonably small ones, but i also ordered some larger eyes from 6060 so i can complete this chewbacca.

so far it looks pretty good, but i have to attach the eyes before i finish it, and they haven't come yet (because um, i just ordered them at like 8pm last night). i may make the arms tonight !

aaaaaaaand, finally, the second episode of the pacific aired last night, and i say with regret that it hasn't really pulled me in yet.

leckie

- i hate the tom hanks narration. i guess it's necessary, but i really don't like it. he has the WORST VOICE.
- the title sequence is beautiful but it's like, 400 minutes long.
- the episode was only 50 minutes long !
- it felt rushed and weirdly paced just like the first episode
- they keep TELLING INSTEAD OF SHOWING. like, they're being super heavy handed with the characterization of the main characters- like, "LECKIE, YOU REALLY KNOW HOW TO KEEP EVERYONE'S SPIRITS UP, YOU REALLY HAVE A WAY WITH WORDS, YOU'RE A BARD" and "BASILONE, YOU'LL GET A MEDAL FOR THIS ! YOU'RE A HERO !!!"
- it's just so clumsy trying to cover 3 years of time between 3 separate units (well, 2 right now) who don't interact with each other.

overall i'm cautiously optimistic. i also have to say that i keep comparing it to band of brothers, which it will never live up to, and that when band of brothers aired, i didn't know ANYTHING about what was going on so it was all novel and a surprise to me, but i've learned all about this stuff in the past 9 years, so knowing what's going to happen and to whom might kill it a little for me.

phewwwww that took forever. i'm gonna go have a ginger ale.

p.s. i bought a bunch of healthy food for lunch and brought everything but my veggie burgers to work
p.p.s. as i try to work on eating disorder stuff, my brain has shut down and no food seems appetizing to me anymore. i keep coming up with creative menus each week and i don't want any of the stuff i buy or make. ugh.
p.p.p.s. i registered for my first class for summer 2010 and i start in may !
